The Challenge
The Estate of Michael Jackson wanted to premiere Slave to the Rhythm with Jackson performing it. The performance had to hold up in a live televised awards show, in a room of industry peers who had seen him perform for real, with a full dance troupe on stage at the same time.
The Musion Solution
A 13m x 6m Eyeliner flame retardant foil built into an ornate proscenium set. The holographic figure performed centre stage with live dancers around it, choreographed so the two occupied the same space rather than taking turns.
The Deployment
The foil was engineered into the set build rather than added to it, which is what allowed the depth of the proscenium and the scale of the auditorium to read on camera. M1 certified foil meant the installation met the venue’s fire requirements for a permanent build within the show.
The Result
42.5 million YouTube views. The most watched Billboard Music Awards broadcast in thirteen years. A live network television performance by an artist who had been dead for five years, in front of an audience of his peers.
