The Challenge
Vodafone was launching 5G in the UK and needed to demonstrate what the network actually made possible. A speed test proves a number. It does not prove anything a customer can feel.
The Musion Solution
A live holographic call. Steph Houghton MBE, then captain of the England women’s football team, appeared as a life-size hologram 190 miles from where she was standing, and passed a football to a young fan in the room.
The Deployment
Capture at one end over Vodafone’s 5G network, holographic projection at the other. Live, two way, with no perceptible delay. The interaction between Houghton and the fan was unscripted and had to work first time in front of press.
The Result
The UK’s first holographic call over 5G, and the image that carried Vodafone’s 5G launch coverage. It became the template for a multi-country Vodafone programme that ran across Romania, Portugal, Cyprus, Qatar, Greece, Spain and Germany over the following three years.
