We put film fans on the BAFTA red carpet without moving them an inch

In February, EE connected film fans to the BAFTA red carpet. Not by showing them on a screen at the side, and not by filming them for a package to run later. They were on the carpet, at life size, being interviewed by presenters, while standing in Bath.

It was the first time 4K holographic telepresence has been delivered over 5G at a major awards ceremony.

Why a red carpet is the hard version

Holographic telepresence is difficult anywhere. A red carpet makes every part of it harder.
It is bright, which is the opposite of what people assume holographic projection needs. It is crowded, so the footprint has to be small and the rigging has to be invisible. It runs to a fixed schedule set by the arrivals, so there is no rehearsal window and no second take. And it is being filmed continuously from multiple angles, so anything that works only from one seat in the house does not work at all.

What made it possible

Three things.

The optical system. Musion’s Pepper’s Ghost geometry puts a life-size figure into real space rather than onto a surface. That is what lets a presenter stand next to someone who is 100 miles away and interview them as if they are there.

The foil. M1 fire certification is what allows an installation like this inside a public venue at all. Without it the conversation ends before it starts.

The network. 4K over 5G with no fixed cabling to the capture location, which meant the far end could be a room in Bath rather than a broadcast facility.

The part that matters

The technical first is the headline. The thing worth paying attention to is what it did for the people involved.
Film fans who would never get within a mile of that carpet were on it, talking to presenters, in front of the cameras, as themselves. That is the actual product. The 4K and the 5G are how we got there.
